Nature of the Move Grades 2-5

As the weather starts to warm up, the natural world springs into action, plants are blossoming, birds are migrating and traveling long distances, and insects are waking up from overwintering, buzzing back into our neighborhoods as temperatures rise and moisture returns. In this hands-on Library Nature Lab, children and families will explore how care for place, simple actions, and shared responsibility can support wildlife during this busy season of movement and change. Together, we’ll take a closer look at how native plants, wildflowers, and thoughtfully designed urban habitats help birds and pollinators rest, refuel, and thrive. Participants will explore: Migration Season – how birds and pollinators move through our city and what they need along the way Wildflowers & Native Plant Habitat – why native plants matter and how they support migrating species Birds & Migration Barriers – challenges wildlife face in urban environments and how we can help Responsibility & Action – simple, age-appropriate ways to care for local nature Community Science – how observing and sharing what we see supports real research, including opportunities to participate in the City Nature Challenge
