GRAND OPENING: JUST BETWEEN US

How does something come to matter? In the words of artist M Clark: “A rock can remain only a rock, while another becomes inseparable from the person who gave it to us. Meaning isn’t something a thing simply has . It forms through what connects us to it: through use, a person, a memory, the passage of time. I approach this question through metallic foil. I don’t use it because it symbolizes meaning, but because its behavior lets me investigate the same question physically. The foil on each piece collects what’s around it, gaining significance and meaning as it reflects and tangles the objects, shadows, and colors of the room. In any moment, part of what will be seen is imposed on it by the circumstances it’s placed in. Within each composition, every mark I add changes how meaningful the one beside it becomes. I build significance into a line through its relationship to the marks around it. The meaning is in between, in the relationships, not in the marks themselves. These works are a study of how significance forms—how what connects to something creates meaning.”
