About the book An introduction to the great freedom and power that comes with our constitutional First Amendment rights. Free is a word that comes with great power. We are free, we are that power. The First Amendment gives us many rights as Americans—from the freedom to practice any religion (or no religion) to the freedom to look the way we want to look. It gives us the right to disagree, to speak up, and to stand up for what we believe in. But not everyone in the world has these rights—or these freedoms. Attorney and educator Allison Matulli’s sparse, clear text accompanies Edel Rodriguez’s evocative art, yielding a memorable commentary on the privilege of being an American. Praise for We Are Free “This work will inspire civic curiosity in even young children while reminding caregivers of rights worth fighting for and celebrating. An impressive distillation of an essential American virtue.” —Kirkus, starred review "A stark and impactful primer that ends with a call to engagement: 'What will you do with your power?'" —Publishers Weekly "A bold and empowering book that introduces the power of our First Amendment freedoms, this is an important addition to all libraries." —School Library Journal "An inspirational primer." —Booklist About the author Allison Matulli, EdD, JD, is a Global Fulbright Scholar and certified Montessori lead educator who believes that knowing one’s rights and respecting those of others is the path to creating conscious citizens and community—starting with our kids.
