Little New-Yorkers: Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreño Played the Piano for President Lincoln

Join us in celebrating Latinx Heritage Month! Today we are reading Dancing Hands, written by Margarita Engle and illustrated by Rafael López. While she was growing up in Venezuela, Teresa Carreño spent her days happily playing the piano. When she and her family moved to New York City, she felt homesick and worried about the Civil War taking place in the United States. But when President Abraham Lincoln invited her to play piano at the White House, Teresa discovered her music could bring people comfort and hope in difficult times. After the story, we’ll make art inspired by different styles of music! Join us every Tuesday and Friday at the Museum for story time and crafts! Each class includes a special hello song, silly dances and games, a story book reading, and a craft to do after the story.
