Summer Social: Welcome to the New Tang Wing for American Democracy!
You’re invited to a lively summer social to celebrate the opening of our brand-new Tang Wing for American Democracy! There will be artmaking, games, live music, singing, dancing, and more. We can’t wait to share our new space with you. Museum Bingo All Day | All Ages Pick up a bingo card when you arrive, then set off on a fun family search for museum objects, history trivia, and cool new galleries! Your card will keep everyone exploring throughout the New York Historical, the DiMenna Children’s History Museum, and the new Tang Wing for American Democracy. Bingo boards include squares like Abraham Lincoln, calligraphy, fancy dinnerware, the word “democracy” and more! Once you’ve found your winners, bring your card to the NY History Store to collect a prize. “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, Performance and Craft Activity 12, 12:45, and 1:30 pm | All Ages Did you know that the hymn “Lift Every Voice and Sing” is considered by the Black American community to be "The Black National Anthem"? It symbolizes the resilience, faith, and hope for liberty of Black Americans. Join us to learn about why the song is important to the community, and how it is also a symbol of the ongoing American revolution. Then participate in a child-friendly craft that will help families delve deeper into the song. Treasure Trunk Theatre: Jazz Age and Broadway Musical Adventures 12 and 12:40 pm | Recommended for ages 8 and under Join Treasure Trunk Theatre for adventures of music and history! At these drop-in programs, children will use their imaginations to sing and dance their way through time. Come try theater games and props and, of course, discover what’s inside the magical Treasure Trunk! At 12:00, journey through the Jazz Age, and at 12:40, belt it out on Broadway! Dancing the Revolution: A Dance Workshop with The New York Baroque Dance Company 2-3:30 pm | All participants must be ages 8 and up Free with preregistration > Join The New York Baroque Dance Company for a lively dance workshop! Participants will learn social dances from George Washington’s time in the early days of the American nation, including some by Francis Johnson, the American composer who brought the whole nation to the dance floor. In true 18th-century style, participants will practice elegant figures and spirited steps that will bring the world of the ball to life. Whether you’re new to historical dance or a seasoned reveler, this workshop will give you the confidence to shine on the dance floor and earn you free admission to NYBDC’s Ball on June 28. Costumes admired but not required! Space is limited, participants must register in advance.
