Sunday Story Time: Free to Learn: How Alfredo Lopez Fought for the Right to Go to School

Join us in celebrating Latinx Heritage Month! In 1977 in Tyler, Texas, Alfredo Lopez was getting ready to start second grade, when his parents told him he had to stay home. Students who’d moved to the United States without the right paperwork were no longer allowed to go to school without paying money. In Free to Learn, written by Cynthia Levinson and illustrated by Mirelle Ortega, we’ll learn how, alongside other families, Alfredo and his parents fought against this unfair rule. After the story, make your own back to school pencil case! Join us every Sunday in person at the Museum for story time and crafts! Each class includes a special hello song, silly dances and games, a story book reading, and a craft to do after the story.
