Mohawks that Built New York City

This indigenous dance show pays a tribute to the Mohawk Iron Workers in a unique story many New Yorkers do not know. Inspired by a documentary about Mohawk iron worker and activist "Spudwrench," the show recounts the 150 years story of Rotinonhsión:ni people from the Kanien’keha:ka (Mohawk) communities of Ahkwesáhsne and Kahnawà:ke, who moved to Brooklyn to open a string of boarding houses and established the new community of “Little Caughnawaga.” The project is created by Cristina Cortes and Yvonne Wakim Dennis (Cherokee) with guest artists Betto Perez and Daygot Leegos (Haudenosaunee), who is a song writer, raper, and a traditional smoke dancer. Audio tracks by Gary Shepherd from Netherlands, as well as Elaine Benavides, Emilio ZEF China, and Tonica Studio.
