US 250: Trailblazers: Viewfinder & Alice Austen

Discover the work of Alice Austen, an American trailblazer and early documentary photographer who captured everyday life in New York City. Through close-looking activities with her Street Types of New York photographs, participants will learn how to “read” images as both art and history while exploring stories of immigration and community. Young artists will then create their own viewfinder and document the streets around them, becoming documentary photographers of their own world. This activity design is made possible through a collaboration with The Alice Austen House .
