Dirt Batteries: 4-H Stem Club (Grades 3-7)
Earth Batteries Just in time for Earth Day, participants will learn about electrons by making a working battery using potting soil. Dirt batteries, or earth batteries, are devices that generate low-voltage electricity using moist soil as an electrolyte between two dissimilar metal electrodes (typically copper and zinc). These water-activated, sustainable cells operate via harvesting electrons released by microbes in the soil as they decompose organic matter.
